Abstract : There is a definite agreement on the fact that in this era, universities encounter deeply impacting challenges. Such challenges stem from the fast changes especially the transformation into knowledge societies, the accelerating developments in information and communication technologies, the globalization phenomenon, the increasing demand for higher education, and the orientation towards total quality…. etc. So, it became imperative that traditional universities have to encounter transformation, have shifts to be more responsive, and have to accentuate their capacities for meeting the changing and increasing expectation of university roles. Universities are the homeland of knowledge, the main engines for its development and enhancement in all areas of scientific creativity and innovation, and the agents of change to drive society into development and progress especially in its human and social development. One of the aspects of good performance of a university is to be aware of reviewing and evaluating the performance of its organizational units to explore the levels of their performance, to define the obstacles that hider such performance and make the necessary procedures to alleviate the performance, and to reward those who have excellent performance. One of the complementary used practices to explore performance levels at universities focus on selecting and designing a group of indicators that are named the key performance indicators (KPI) to measure the performance of both each unit and the averall university performance. They are meant to be the group of indicators or the quantitative and qualitative standards that are defined by the university to evaluate the university performance, compare that with the indicators of previous years, or compare them with performance indicators of other universities. This research concentrates on following different procedures to define and design the key performance indicators of king Abdulaziz University as a whole and their organizational units like colleges. In this report, the researchers have gathered the literature and secondary data about the research topic, then the team has made an initial effort to define the key performance indicators at universities. A good effort was made for the preference of the indicators acceding to the university accumulated experiences and the vision of some senior school officers. Finally, the researchers proposed some recommendations to benefit from the right application of the chosen key indicators.
